Another Eden Begins vs Another Eden: Overview

Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space is Wright Flyer Studios’ live-service mobile RPG running since 2017 — free to play, gacha-driven, continuously updated. Another Eden Begins is a buy-to-play single-player JRPG released September 17, 2026 on Switch 2, Switch and Steam, developed by Studio Prisma with WFS, and built as a standalone reconstruction of the mobile game’s Part 1 story. Same core creators — scenario and direction by Masato Kato, main theme by Yasunori Mitsuda — but almost everything else was rebuilt from scratch.

Business Model

  • Mobile game: free-to-play with gacha pulls, chronos stone currency, stamina and live-service updates.
  • Begins: one-time purchase ($39.99 / ¥128 CN) with no gacha, no stamina and no subscription.
  • The developers explicitly said in interviews they want players who dislike gacha to give Begins a try.
  • The two monetization models are the cleanest summary of the split: one sells chance, the other sells a complete game.

Engine & Graphics

This is an engine-level rewrite, not a port. The mobile game still runs on Cocos2d-x — a 2D engine WFS engineers had to modify into a de-facto private engine because official support ended. Begins moved to Unity and rebuilt graphics and systems from zero; producer Shinnosuke Hirasawa put it plainly: "we actually changed the entire game engine." Presentation is fully remade for console, with new lighting and effects on top of the same art direction. In practice that means the same hand-drawn character look, but rendered in real 3D spaces with free camera movement instead of the mobile game’s 2D corridor scenes.

Battle System

The mobile game uses traditional command-based turn combat. Begins replaces it with the Chain System: skills chain automatically when conditions are met, so party-building becomes a puzzle — you plan chains at the formation stage rather than reacting in battle. The Another Force overdrive mechanic returns but was rebalanced with new numbers and pacing. Reviews single this out as the biggest gameplay upgrade — Fami通’s editors specifically praised the Chain System as tactical and highly satisfying.

Character Acquisition

The biggest reversal of all: characters. In the mobile game, the roster comes from gacha pulls with random rates. In Begins, all 18 companions join through story progression — encounter quests, character quests and kinship (bond) quests — with every recruitment and bond scene fully voiced. Nothing is random, and every companion is free once you reach them. For new players this removes the single biggest barrier to entry: there is no "good roster" behind a paywall, and party strength comes from who you have actually met in the story.

Exploration & Encounters

  • Mobile game: characters move along near-straight lines (roughly side-scrolling); random encounters trigger battles.
  • Begins: fully free 3D movement, hidden chests and stronger exploration rewards.
  • Encounters became visible symbol encounters — you can avoid battles you do not want.
  • Maps were redesigned around the new movement, though reviews note mobile-era backtracking remains.

Voice Acting

The mobile version’s main story has stretches without voice acting and other dated audio gaps. Begins records voice for the main scenario, side quests and essentially every scene featuring major characters — fully voiced in both English and Japanese. The English cast is recorded by Side UK and reprises the mobile game’s cast; the Japanese cast is the same returning ensemble.

Progression & Economy

Progression was rebuilt around classic console JRPG loops. The mobile game lets you inject experience with items and grind materials long-term; Begins returns to leveling by battle, saving money for weapons, and a normal shop economy. The producer’s framing was blunt: "this is not a mobile game" — the item-driven shortcuts are gone.

New Content in Begins

  • New Game+ mode, guided by the new sand-spirit character Ramiu.
  • 10+ branching endings decided by player choices.
  • 19 playable characters — the Part 1 roster plus newcomers.
  • The Part 1 story gets a complete conclusion (not a cliffhanger), with a hook left open for a sequel.
  • The mobile game’s later chapters remain exclusive to the live-service version.

Cross-Game Bonus

The two games are connected by a one-way bridge: Begins’ Early Bird Bonus contains serial codes redeemable only in the mobile game — a "Skip Part 1" code for new mobile players, an Encounter Ramiu ticket, Aldo and Feinne outfits in Begins style, and three 5★-guaranteed 10-pull tickets. The codes cannot be used inside Begins itself; the mobile game keeps operating as its own live-service title.

Which Game Should You Play?

The honest answer depends on what you want. Play Another Eden Begins if you want a complete, offline story with a real ending, no gacha and no subscription — one purchase covers everything, and the demo lets you try it first. Play the mobile game if you want the ongoing live-service chapters, weekly content, and the full 10-year catalogue that Begins does not include — Begins only remakes Part 1, and the later arcs stay exclusive to the mobile version. Many players do both: Begins as the polished story experience, the mobile game as the continuing saga, with the Early Bird codes as the bridge between them.
